Phulkari Lumber Cushion Cover
This is a stunning decorative pillow/cushion cover which has been fashioned from a vintage Phulkari shawl originating from Northern India. The base fabric is handloom cotton which has been intricately hand-embroidered with silk stitching in geometric designs. It is backed with plain cotton and has a concealed zip.
Phulkari (“Phul meaning flower and “Kari” meaning work) is a traditional rural art of embroidering a shawl crafted by women in the Punjab. Phulkari fabrics are linked integrally with milestone events in a woman’s life, especially birth and wedding celebrations.
The pillow cover measures 60cm by 40cm. The original phulkari shawl is estimated to have been made between the mid to late 20th century. It is in good condition, with some signs of wear and tear in keeping with its age which goes to underline the history of this unique piece.
